When: May 2, 2010
Score: Delbarton 39, New Rochelle 10
It was a busy and successful day at the new Ryan/Fleury sports field complex on Sunday with Delbarton baseball advancing to the third round of the MCT when they defeated Whippany Park and Delbarton Rugby Clinching their MetNY league with their 39-10 defeat of New Rochelle.
Fullback JT Colucci finished off a well rehearsed backline move to open the scoring just 7 minutes into the first half and Blaze Feury scored a few minutes later on a “dummy and dash”. Scrum half Jake Feury took a pop from 8 man Ryan Amspacher off the back of a scrum and dove over for a third try. Andrew Soulas pounded in another, finishing a series of forward pick and drives. Jake converted two of these first half tries to give the Green wave a comfortable 24-0 lead at the half.
New Rochelle came out hard in the second half and scored a converted try and a penalty kick to pull within tow tries before Delbarton got back on track. Ryan Amspacher carried several defenders over the line for a try and Matt Infante, who took over fly half duties for Blaze broke free for another try. JT Colucci had another breathtaking run leaving several defenders grabbing for air before being brought down just short of the try line. But JT was quick to gain his feet, then the ball, and dive over for the final score of the game. Man of the match honors go to Matt Infante for directing the backline with ease from the fly half position when called upon.
The Delbarton B side played some of their best rugby of the year and defeated the New Rochelle B’s 14-5. Things did not start out well as New Rochelle scored very early on. But Robert Patten got things back on track with a nice try, which he also converted, giving Delbarton a 7-5 halftime lead. In the second half, Prop Alex Vraebel, who played in both games today, scored the winning try with a bruising run. Again, Patten converted, giving Delbarton a 14-5 win. Sean Maguire is awarded Man of the match for his continued hard work resulting in some gain line breaks and hard tackles.
